This magnificent foghorn is a dramatic reminder of past days at sea. Until today's digital era and GPS tracking, mariners relied on eyes, ears and stars for navigation. The horn here can still be operated by pneumatic pressure - and it's generated by two diesel engines located near the lighthouse. They're powered up when the lighthouse is open to visitors and you can see and hear them pumping air down the pipes. You might even hear the horn!

Nearby, you can just see where a radio beacon once linked the lighthouse with the NLB. When it was installed, it was the first of its kind in Scotland.
